In the event of a Fire:

• When a fire alarm is sounded, all persons must exit the building using the primary fire escape route indicated on the Fire and Tornado Escape Routes Map. USE THE STAIRS, DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.

• Use a secondary escape route if the primary one is blocked by fire or a chemical release.

• If all evacuation routes are blocked by fire, you may use a fire extinguisher to fight your way out of the building.

• If the fire is determined to be small enough to be contained by using a portable fire extinguisher, a trained employee may attempt to suppress or contain the fire when there is no additional risk to life or health.

• Activate a fire alarm pull station on your way out, if it has not already been done.

• Proceed to the primary Emergency Assembly Area as listed on the Escape Route Map.

• Remain at the assembly area until you are informed that it is safe to return to your work area by the appropriate authorities.

In the event of a Tornado Warning:

• You may be warned by one or more of the following means: Storm Warning Alarm, Ames Lab Weather Radio Pager, National Weather Service Radio, public address system, telephone, computer, City of Ames outdoor sirens or by directly being warned.

• Use the primary tornado escape route indicated on the Fire and Tornado Escape Routes Map.

• Use a secondary escape route if the primary one is blocked.

• If the Assembly Area for Tornado Emergencies cannot be reached, take cover in the interior hallways, away from any exterior windows and doors.

• Proceed to the Assembly Area for Tornado Emergencies as listed on the Escape Route Map. They are typically located in the basement of most buildings.  USE THE STAIRS, DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.

• If it is safe to do so, all employees should warn other people they see on their way to the Assembly Area for Tornado Emergencies.

• Remain at the Assembly Area until the alarm is off and you are informed that it is safe to return to your work area.

• If anyone is injured or the building appears damaged, assistance should be requested by calling 9-1-1.
