Research Glossary

These definitions aid in understanding cooperative research. See inside for a complete step-by-step guide.

  • Cost-sharing funds: A program for research projects conducted with Iowa companies. IPRT R&D cost-sharing funds can pay up to 50 percent of project costs.
  • Deliverables: Report, presentation, test data, prototype or process that a company receives at the end of a project.
  • Intellectual Property: Any new or unique innovation that may be protected by a patent or copyright.
  • IPRT: IInstitute for Physical Research and Technology.
  • R&D: Research and development.
  • Research Team: University faculty, staff, scientists and students who work together on a project.

 

Your Technology Commercialization Partner

IPRT Company Assistance helps Iowa companies collaborate with ISU researchers to leverage R&D for projects in technical problem solving, product development and process improvement. IPRT helps companies meet product development needs by finding research collaborators, developing research programs and managing projects to completion. Contracts are negotiated to cover work plans, timelines, publication, intellectual property and budgets.

The Institute for Physical Research and Technology is a network of scientific research centers at Iowa State University. Each year, IPRT helps about 200 firms — from one-person startups to Fortune 500 corporations — solve scientific and engineering problems. IPRT has also worked with more than 40 of the 60+ start-up companies that have formed from ISU technologies in the last 20 years.
