Dr. Bruce Harmon
Dr. Bruce Harmon completed his undergraduate studies at Illinois Institute of Technology and earned his master and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University. He has been at ISU since 1973 when he came to campus through a postdoctoral fellowship in the Ames Laboratory. Dr. Harmon has moved through the ranks of the university and the Ames Laboratory and is now a Distinguished Professor of Physics, Deputy Director of the Ames Laboratory, Program Director of Condensed Matter Physics, and Acting Director of CPCM.
Research Interests
Dr. Harmon’s research areas emphasize computational physics with projects in martensitic phase transformations, high Tc superconductors, circular magnetic x-ray dichroism, optical properties, and magneto-optic materials. Recent work includes ferromagnetic metal oxides and quantum computing.
Awards & Recognitions
Dr. Harmon is a founder of the nationally recognized DOE Computational Science Network (CMSN), a major program to fund and encourage collaborative teams of researchers across national laboratory and university boundaries. He also established the local “Cluster Room” to promote and efficiently house and run modern cluster computers. Dr. Harmon has been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences.
