Noise Control Startup Garners First Research Grant

A start-up company, Vibroacoustics Solutions, Inc., has received a $100,000 award from the National Science Foundation to develop an innovative “smart” material that can control noise and vibrations in applications ranging from home appliances and office furniture to construction equipment and vehicle suspension systems. VSI's commercialization and grant efforts have been supported by IPRT Company Assistance.

Iowa State Awarded $6.5 Million U.S. Air Force Research Contract to Study Aging Military Aircraft*

IPRT's Center for Nondestructive Evaluation has won a $6.5 million contract to research nondestructive evaluation techniques for assessing the aging of military aircraft. The award, from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the most recent in many collaborations between the center and the U.S. Air Force.

Interactive demonstrations will highlight the 8th International Immersive Projection Technology Workshop (IPT 2004) May 13-14 at Iowa State University. Organized by ISU's Virtual Reality Applications Center and the Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Engineering, Stuttgart, Germany, IPT 2004 emphasizes new and unique work in projection-based immersive environments for virtual reality applications.

ISU, State of Iowa, Big Winners in Federal Biomass Research Effort*

Three Iowa State University teams involved in biomass research projects recently received funding from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Energy totaling more than $4 million. The joint grant program between the USDA and U.S. Department of Energy is part of the Bush Administration's effort to increase America's energy independence through the development of additional renewable energy resources. Only 19 projects out of 400 applications were selected for funding. Two IPRT centers, the Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies and the Center for Catalysis, are involved in the effort.

International Immersive Projection Technology Workshop to be Held at ISU, May 2004

The world’s leading experts and users of immersive project technology and virtual reality will meet at Iowa State University for the 8th International Immersive Projection Technology Workshop. Called IPT 2004, the event is organized by IPRT's Virtual Reality Applications Center and the Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Engineering, Stuttgart, Germany. The conference will highlight new and unique work in projection-based immersive environments for virtual reality applications
