Barton, director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology (IPRT) at Iowa State University, has announced his resignation effective Feb. 28, 2007.
December 14, 2006 U.S. Department of Energy Awards Contract for Management and Operation of Ames Laboratory to Iowa State University*The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a five-year, approximately $30 million per year contract to manage and operate its Ames Laboratory to Iowa State University. The new contract takes effect Jan.1, 2007.
December 11, 2006 Ames Lab/IPRT Benefit Auction Raises $3,500 for Emergency Residence Project*The Ames Laboratory and IPRT annual holiday auction raised more than $3,500 for the Story County Emergency Residence Project.
Sept. 18, 2006 MRC Researchers Developing More Powerful Solar Cells*Vik Dalal, director for IPRT's Microelectronics Research Center, is working with PowerFilm Inc., an Ames, Iowa, company that manufactures thin, flexible solar panels, to improve the performance and stability of the company's solar cells. The project is partially supported by a $63,406 grant from the Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program. Dalal also has a three-year, $220,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support a separate but similar research project.
September 1, 2006 CCAT/Iowa State Corn/soy Plastics to be Made into Hog Feeders*CCAT researchers are working with two Iowa companies to make hog feeders from a "bioplastic" invented at ISU. The bioplastic is made from soybean oil reinforced with glass fibers.
July 28, 2006 CSET Researchers Convert Farm Waste to Bio-oil*Researchers from IPRT's Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies are working to take wastes from Iowa farms -- manure and corn stalks -- and turn them into a bio-oil that could be used for boiler fuel and perhaps transportation fuel. The project is being supported by $190,000 in grants from the Iowa Biotechnology Byproducts Consortium.
May 8, 2006 VRAC Upgrade to Create Most Realistic Virtual Reality Room in the World*More than $4 million in equipment upgrades will shine 100 million pixels on the Virtual Reality Application Center's six-sided virtual reality room, called the C6. That's twice the number of pixels lighting up any virtual reality room in the world and 16 times the pixels now projected on the C6, a 10-foot by 10-foot virtual reality room that surrounds users with computer-generated 3-D images. That means the C6 will produce virtual reality at the world's highest resolution.
April 26, 2006 ISU's Robert C. Brown to Senate Committee: The Bioeconomy is Bigger than Biofuels*Robert C. Brown, director of IPRT's Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies, Iowa State's Bergles Professor in Thermal Science and director of Iowa State's Office of Biorenewables Programs, addressed an April 26 hearing held by the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry on the state of the biofuels industry.
April 21, 2006 Newt Gingrich to Address Iowa State Globalization Course*Newt Gingrich -- speaker of the U.S. House from 1995 to 1999 and Time magazine's 1995 "Man of the Year" -- will address an Iowa State University globalization class. Gingrich's lecture, "American Strategies for Success in Competing with China and India in a Globalized World Market," will be 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, in the Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Iowa State's Howe Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. Gingrich will address Iowa State's Technology, Globalization and Culture class taught by Jim Bernard, an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Engineering and founder of IPRT's Virtual Reality Applications Center, and Mark Rectanus, a Professor of German Studies in the Department of World Languages and Cultures.
April 14, 2006 Center for Catalysis Helps Find Better Way to Make Biodiesel*Researchers affliated with IPRT's Center for Catalysis are seeking a new, high-tech catalyst that takes some of the energy, labor and toxic chemicals out of biodiesel production. They've come up with a technology that works in the laboratory. And now they're working with the West Central Cooperative in Ralston to test their discoveries on a larger scale. They're also working to establish a company that would move the new technology into biorefineries.
