The Technology Commercialization groupin IPRT Company Assistance has awarded nearly $95,000 to five early-stage research projects. The funds will support preliminary research on Iowa State innovations with potential to foster economic development in Iowa.

Victor S.-Y. Lin has been appointed director of the Center for Catalysis at Iowa State University. Lin, who also is a professor of chemistry at Iowa State, replaces George Kraus, who was recently named director of Iowa State's Institute for Physical Research and Technology.

Victor Lin, director of IPRT's Center for Catalysis, is working with Mohr Davidow Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm, the Iowa State University Research Foundation and three members of his research team to establish a startup company to produce, develop and market the biodiesel technology he invented at Iowa State. "This technology could change how biodiesel is produced," said Lin, who is also a professor of chemistry at Iowa State.

George Kraus will be the new director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology. He begins his new position July 1, 2007, and will work three-fourths time as director. John Brighton, Iowa State's vice president for research and economic development, said he and the search committee were very impressed with Kraus' academic credentials and his leadership experience over a long period of time.

IPRT's Virtual Reality Applications Center will unveil the $6 million upgrade to its C6 virtual reality room this April. The room is a 10-foot by 10-foot virtual reality cube that immerses users in computer-generated 3-D images and eight channels of audiol. The upgrade gives the room the ability to produce virtual reality at the world's highest resolution. The public is invited to tour C6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in Howe Hall on the Iowa State campus. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (515) 294-3092. The tours will be part of the Emerging Technologies Conference 07.

Alan Goldman has been named interim director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and the Institute for Physical Research and Technology, or IPRT, at Iowa State University. Goldman is currently the division director for Science and Technology at Ames Laboratory. Goldman’s appointment is effective March 1, 2007.
